Schluter Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane

Installing or remodeling a shower can be a difficult endeavor. While ceramic and porcelain tile are extremely durable and easy to maintain, they are not waterproof by themselves. Waterproofing a shower must be addressed from before any tile can be laid because without a properly waterproofed shower, the whole installation becomes susceptible to leaks that can result in structural damage and mold.

Schluter Kerdi is an easy-to-use sheet applied waterproofing membrane. The pliable Schluter Kerdi membrane is made of a soft polyethylene core that can be anchored into thin-set mortar with the special polypropylene fleece webbing that covers both sides. Designed to be used in conjunction with natural stone, ceramic, and porcelain tile coverings, Schluter Kerdi Waterpoofing Membrane can be used to waterproof shower floors and walls, tub surrounds, and other areas or applications that require waterproofing.

In addition to waterproofing, Schluter Kerdi is also resistant to many common chemicals found in residential and commercial applications. Schluter Kerdi will not rot and is durable against alcohols, alkaline and acidic solutions, saline solutions, oils, and many organic solvents.

While the Schluter Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane integrates with the Schluter Kerdi Shower Kits, it can also be used in traditional shower builds that utilize a pre-sloped mortar bed rather than preformed shower base such as the Schluter Shower Tray. Once Schluter Kerd has been installed, tile can be installed with thin-set mortar directly on top of the membrane.

Installation

The Schulter Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane is easy to install. Before installation, cut the membrane down to size and make sure the substrate is clean, even, and load bearing. For most applications, an unmodified thinset can be used. The thinset must be able to effectively penetrate the substrate and the Kerdi Membrane for proper bonding so the thinset must be compatible with the substrate.

Using the Schluter Kerdi Trowel or a 1/4" x 3/16" (6 x 5mm) V-notched trowel, spread the thin-set mortar over the substrate and press the Schluter Kerdi Membrane into the bond coat. To avoid air bubbles, work the Schluter Kerdi Membrane into the mortar with the flat side of the trowel (held at angle) and using smooth, diagonal movements. It is imperative to all air bubbles are worked out for proper bond.

All seams, corners, and connections must be also be addressed for the installation to be waterproof. For seams, the edges of the Kerdi Membrane can be overlapped by 2" and adhered with unmodified thinset. Schluter Kerdi-Band (installed with unmodified thinset) can also be used to cover the joints created by adjoining edges of the Kerdi Membrane together. Schluter Kerdi-Band can also be used for all floor and wall connections.
