Penetrating / Impregnating Sealers
StoneTech Penetrating and impregnating sealers (a type of penetrating sealer) work by penetrating material's pores, depositing polymers, and forming a protective barrier. Depending on how a particular StoneTech sealer is designed to work, the sealer may protect against only water-based stains or it may protect against both water-based and oil-based stains. Premium sealers will offer the best protection against stains and require less frequent applications. The longevity of the sealer will differ for each installation and depend on how much traffic the area receives, cleaning products used, and if it is an interior or exterior application.
Water-based stains include coffee, tea, and soda while oil-based stains include grease, cooking oil, and body oil. When sealing areas that may be exposed to oils on a regular basis like bathrooms and kitchens, select a StoneTech sealer that will protect against both types of stains. For exterior applications that may be exposed to elements, choose a sealer that is weather resistant. Sealers will also help protect against dirt, grime, mold, and mildew stains. While StoneTech sealers will help to repel stains, no sealer will make the surface completely stain proof. Premium sealers will protect the best and give more time cleanup, but staining can still happen, and spills need to be cleaned in a timely fashion
StoneTech penetrating sealers are either water-based or solvent-based. In very hard or dense materials, solvent-based sealers are usually more effective because the smaller molecules are able to penetrate deeper. Surfaces like dense granite, polished marble, and porcelain can be difficult for water-based sealer to penetrate because water-based sealers have a larger molecule size. Many solvent-based sealer also carry VOC restrictions, however.
StoneTech penetrating sealers are designed to preserve the natural look of the stone. Unlike a topical sealer or surface coating, penetrating sealers will leave a natural look and not alter the surface appearance by adding a glossy finish or sheen. Additionally, since penetrating sealers work only from within the pores of the material, physical damage can still result on the surface including scratches, abrasions, and acid etching from lemon, vinegar, and other acid foods and liquids.
